Old She-Hyena
Old She-Hyena is a ritualistic piece performed in a wearable sculpture in San Francisco. The sculpture represents the artist’s grandmother’s body, with her inner parts and organs bravely displayed. The sculpture and the photographs - are residues of the performance, resembling a distanced aestheticization of museum artifacts from exotic cultures, the objects abandoned from their aura and become more authentic, fetishized objects. The sculpture itself transforms into a performance acting as an extended body for the artist who animates it. The dualistic idea of body/soul, body/mind, male/female, nature/culture and the “primitive” ways of interrelating with our surroundings are playfully subverted by this way. Almost like a paratoner, she collects and carries the anguish, cruelty of restless bodies and unfolds the deferring relations with our surroundings through reiterating and redressing from a different perspective instead of relocating a lost connection.
