Güneş Terkol
Güneş Terkol lives and works in Istanbul. Terkol takes inspiration from her immediate surroundings, collects materials and stories which she weaves into her sewing pieces, videos, sketches, and musical compositions. She is also a member of Ha Za Vu Zu artist collective and GuGuOu music group.
Güneş Terkol’s artworks are mostly inspired by mythological stories and her own past along with her dreams. Starting point of her series of works is the female conversations, which the artist saved during the workshops she organised in different countries.
This is the source of the intimacy and essence of her artwork. During these workshops, experimental methods and organic materials are used to create magical colours. These colours are parallel to the fantasticality of the dreams, stories and memories of the participating women; all the colours carry a piece from them. Terkol is sewing and embroidering fine transparent fabrics, putting them one after another and on top of another; so do the colours, memories, stories and dreams; they are superimposed. We, the viewers are invited to walk around the fabrics hanging in space: invitation to get lost and to find ourselves again while wandering among them.
Güneş Terkol graduated from Mimar Sinan University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting in 2004. She received her master’s degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Yıldız Technical University, and after completing her studies she attended artist residences in Paris, New York, London, and Chongqing. She has participated in a number of group exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad, and has had seven solo exhibitions in Istanbul, Ankara and Chongqing. In addition to the banner projects she has been carrying out as collective projects realised with women from different countries, sound workshops also constitute an important part of her works. Having participated in Lyon Biennale in 2007, Gwangju Biennale in 2014, and Sao Paulo Biennial in 2016, most recently the artist took part in the 16th Istanbul Biennial last year with a giant installation titled Worlbmon.
